Mangalitsa Pigs

It all begins with an idea… or a birthday present. Our first Mangalitsas were a very romantic present from my husband. Over the years, they have become fixtures on the farm with nearly 2 acres of wooded land to roam.

Mangalitsa pigs are a unique breed known for their curly, woolly coats and rich flavor. Originating in Hungary in the 19th century, they can be referred to as "sheep pigs" because of their distinctive fur. Mangalitsas are prized for their high-quality meat, particularly their marbled fat, which makes them known as the ‘kobe beef’ of pork. They are also known for their hardiness and ability to thrive in various climates.

PIGLETS

We frequently have piglets that are born and bred on the farm. They remain with both parents in their farrow until about 10 weeks of age. They are raised in the pasture and trained to electric fence. We have piglets for sale during various times of the year.

  • Mangalitsa pigs are a heritage breed native to Hungary, known for their curly, woolly coats and high-quality, flavorful meat.

  • Mangalitsa pork is known for its unique characteristics, primarily due to the breed of pig from which it comes. Here are some key features that make Mangalitsa pork special:

    1. Rich Flavor: The meat is renowned for its rich, buttery flavor, often compared to that of high-quality beef. This flavor comes from the pigs' diet, which includes a mix of grass, grains, and acorns.

    2. Marbling: Mangalitsa pork has exceptional marbling, meaning it has a higher fat content distributed throughout the meat. This results in a juicier and more tender eating experience.

    3. Healthier Fat: The fat in Mangalitsa pork is considered healthier than that of many other breeds, containing a higher proportion of monounsaturated fats, which are better for heart health.

    4. Culinary Versatility: Chefs appreciate Mangalitsa pork for its versatility, making it suitable for a variety of cooking methods, from roasting and grilling to charcuterie.

    5. Sustainability: Mangalitsa pigs are raised in more sustainable farming practices, with an emphasis on animal welfare and natural feeding methods.

Overall, Mangalitsa pork is celebrated for its superior taste, texture, and the unique qualities of the breed itself.

  • Mangalitsa pigs are great for first time pig-owners and experienced farmers alike!

They need ample outdoor space to roam and root, and they thrive in a wooded pasture. They are extremely cold hardy and require minimal care-taking so long as they have a 3 walled structure of shelter.

  • A balanced diet including grains, pasture, and foraged foods, such as acorns, roots, and grass, is essential for their growth and flavor development.

  • Our Mangalitsas are not pets but they are very friendly and enjoy a head or back scratch. Piglets are handled from birth.

Pigs are social animals and will do best in the presence of other pigs.
